Instagram Hashtag Generator

The five hashtags to post, plus a wider pool to swap from.

Instagram capped posts and Reels at five hashtags in December 2025, so a generator that hands you 30 tags to paste is handing you something the platform will not take. This one picks the five worth spending, one high-reach, two mid-size, two niche, and keeps the rest visible underneath as alternatives.

How it works

1

Type a topic

Single word, niche phrase, or even a product category. "sourdough", "minimalist interior", "web3 founder" all work.

2

We pick five, not thirty

One high-reach tag for discovery, two mid-size where a smaller account can hold a position, two niche tags for people already searching the topic.

3

Swap from the pool

The full tiered list stays on screen, so you can trade a pick for something that fits the specific post without generating again.

4

Copy with one click

The copy button takes the five, in paste order, ready for the caption.

Frequently asked questions

Five. Instagram announced the cap on 19 December 2025 and it applies to posts and Reels for every account type. The older "use all 30" and "5-15 is the sweet spot" advice both predate the change, so any guide still repeating them is out of date.

With only five tags there is little reason to hide them, so the caption is the simpler default and keeps them visible if someone screenshots the post. The first comment still works if you want the opening line clean.

Yes. Using a shadow-banned hashtag suppresses the post's reach across all hashtags it carries, which matters far more now that you only have five. Instagram doesn't publish the banned list; the safe default is to avoid generic spammy tags (#like4like, #follow4follow, #f4f).

Why this generator gives you five tags and a pool

Type a topic and you get five hashtags to post, with the wider tiered list kept underneath to swap from. That shape is not a style choice. Instagram capped posts and Reels at five hashtags in December 2025, so five is the whole budget now.

What the cap changed

The old playbook was volume: fill the slots, cover every angle, let one tag out of thirty catch. That method is simply unavailable, and most of the hashtag advice still sitting online was written for it. If a guide recommends nine tags in a 3-3-3 split, or calls 5 to 15 the sweet spot, it predates the change.

Five slots turn every tag into an opportunity cost. A tag sitting on two million posts scrolls past your entry in seconds, so it can be worth one slot as a lottery ticket and never worth three. The split this tool picks is one high-reach tag, two mid-size, two niche: one shot at the wide room, two rooms you can hold, two rooms where the people already care.

Where the tags come from

Honesty about the machinery: the bundles are curated lists per niche, kept deliberately practical, not a live crawl of Instagram. When your topic matches a curated niche, you get its bundle; when it doesn't, the generator builds tags around your actual keyword rather than mislabeling some unrelated niche as a match. No login, nothing tracked, regenerate as often as you like.

Should you always use all five?

The cap is a ceiling, not a quota. Instagram's own guidance points at fewer and more targeted tags rather than filling the space, so a post with three genuinely accurate tags is better served by three. Use the pool to find accurate tags, not to reach the number.

Check tags before you lean on them

Not every tag is a healthy room, and a trending hashtag is not automatically a relevant one. Some are restricted or flooded with spam, and posting into them helps nobody. The habit that prevents it takes thirty seconds: search a tag inside Instagram before adopting it into your permanent set. If the tag's page looks thin, broken or unrelated to its name, skip it. There is nearly always a neighbouring tag with the same audience and a cleaner room.

Build a library, not a lucky block

A five-tag cap makes a personal library more valuable, not less, because now you have to choose well every single time. Keep three buckets in your notes app sorted by size, add tags you meet in the strong posts of your niche, retire tags that never show up in your reach sources, and pick a fresh five per post instead of pasting one identical block forever. Reusing the same five on everything narrows you to a single audience.

Edit like an owner

Copy the set, then cut anything that does not genuinely describe the post. With thirty tags a loose one was noise; with five it is a fifth of your distribution spent on the wrong room. Hashtags are seasoning, not the meal: they help the right people find a post that already deserves the find.

After the reach comes the read

Hashtags can carry strangers to your profile, and then the profile takes over: the follower count and the numbers under recent posts decide whether a visitor stays. That second act is what the paid catalog covers, starting with Instagram followers, priced per 1,000 in plain text with a free 30-day refill on every order.
